ABC Council approves new school design for St Peter’s PS
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council have approved an application by Hamilton Architects to demolish St Peter’s Primary School Collegeland in Co Armagh and replace it with a new five-classroom building.
The new 1,208m2 school, which will be built on the current 1.15ha site at 90 Collegelands Road, Charlemont, will have associated vehicle access via a pupil drop-off/pick-up zone, increased car parking and grassed play areas.
The design of the newbuild aims to capture the connection between the people and the land, and to reflect its rural identity through the use of materials typically found within the surrounding landscape. The materials employed will be austere but durable, with the intention of reducing running costs and giving the building a longer, more sustainable life.
As well as the new classrooms accessed from a central circulation area, there will be two resource areas, a multi-purpose hall for shared dining and sports activities, multi-purpose teaching rooms, staff rooms, administration offices and changing/WC facilities.
Each classroom wing can be closed off from the main hall, which is accessed via the main circulation area, to facilitate out-of-hours external activities so ensuring access to the facility for the whole community.
